How do I clean my Platypus bottle?

Platypus bottles are dishwasher safe. When placing Platypus bottles in a dishwasher, make sure they are fully expanded for optimal cleaning. Note: not all bottles may fit in a dishwasher, especially sizes 2 L and greater.

You can also hand wash your bottle using warm or hot soapy water. Using our Reservoir Cleaning Kit helps access tough-to-reach places.

For deeper cleaning:

  1. 1. Per liter (1 L) of your bottle’s volume, add ¼ cup (60 mL) of baking soda to ¾ cup (180 mL) of water and shake for 30 seconds (e.g., for a 2 L bottle, use ½ cup (120 mL) of baking soda with 1 ½ cups (360 mL) of water).
  2. 2. Add ¼ cup (60 mL) lemon juice per liter (1 L), close and shake for 10 seconds, then vent by loosening the cap away from your face.
  3. 3. Reseal the bottle and repeat shaking and venting three times. Expel as much air as possible, cap the bottle, and soak for 20 minutes.
  4. 4. Dump the solution and rinse the bottle three times with hot water.

Caution: When adding lemon juice to baking soda, effervescence occurs and will cause pressure to build in a capped Platypus product.

How do I dry my Platypus bottle?

Platypus bottles can be dried by blowing a little air into them to inflate, then letting them stand upright and uncapped until the water evaporates.

Can I put beverages other than water in my Platypus bottle, reservoir, or storage product?

You can put a variety of beverages in your Platypus bottle, reservoir, or storage product. Just make sure you clean it thoroughly after each use to prevent bacteria from growing in it (including any hydration tubes or bite valves). Carbonated beverages are not recommended.

How do I disinfect my Platypus bottle?

To disinfect your Platypus bottle, fill it with a solution of unscented household bleach and water, using a concentration of 2-5 drops per liter of water. Close and swirl for 10 seconds. Leave filled overnight. Dump solution and rinse bottle three times with hot water, then air dry.For a more planet-friendly alternative, use a chlorine-free, hydrogen peroxide-based bleach alternative like Free and Clear™ available from Seventh Generation®.

Can I freeze my Platypus bottle?

Yes. Lay it half-full on its side in freezer with all air purged. Do not over-fill. Water expands as it freezes and this can burst your bottle

Reviews

Always in my pack

"I’m a fly fishing and hunting guide. It’s rare that I’m in the woods or in a stream without one of these in my pack. Despite my prodding to bring enough water, clients often underestimate how much water they will need. The flexibility of the Platy bottle allows me to stick an extra 2 liters in my pack without adding bulk or extra weight. I’ve never had one leak or fail on me. Definitely recommend."

Longtime user, great bags overall

"I've used these bags for several decades, including 8 summers as a wilderness ranger in both the Sierra and southern Utah. I've found over time these bags always develop holes/punctures but those are patch-able unless they're on a seam. These bags are immensely helpful for having compact water storage options and I'm ordering 5 more right now after spending 6 weeks backpacking in the Grand Canyon area. It's always a good idea to have several of these on hand especially when dealing with the silty water and alum additions necessary with the Colorado River."

Platy Bottle

"My Platypus Platy bottles- 1L and 2L have been working for me backpacking and as a ranger for almost 30 years, only this week did the 1L develop a tiny leak at the top. Forget the Smartwater bottle, these roll up."

Ron (5/5)

Hands down best water carry

"Absolutely the best way to carry water. I’ve owned the 2 liter since 2013 and it’s indestructible. I even had it filled with water one time and it fell of my kitchen counter which is 36” high and it never broke or leaked. It’s so light empty you would never know this could carry 2 liters. I also own the 1 liter which I use for personal hydration as I walk. Love them both terrific products."

Lee-AZ (5/5)

Poor material, leaks

"Unfortunately, after a week of use, the bottle leaked. A defect can happen. The worst part is that after contacting customer service, they refused to replace it under warranty. Definitely avoid; a brand's quality is also evident in its after-sales service."

Marco (1/5)

Works great and durable

"I use it as a backup reservoir for both hiking and motorcycle camping. It has gone on multiple day trips and never leaked. So far a I am very happy."

Adam (5/5)

Nice while it lasted

"I liked it while it lasted, but it didn't last long. Only took it on about 5 hikes before the seam broke. When to get some water and I pulled out an empty bottle and suddenly was 2L short on water. Probably would have been better off spending $3 for a 2L Smart Water bottle, which I've had for years without breaking."

Ryan (3/5)

Great construction and has proven

"Great construction and has proven very durable. I wish there was either a hole for attaching a lanyard or some form of handle."

peter t. (4/5)

Love the weight and versatility

"Love the weight and versatility of these bags/bottles. They store compactly when not in use."

Jay P. (5/5)
