Good design, limited lifespan

"I just retired my Front Range after ~40 days of use over 5 years in cloudy summer/fall conditions in the Brooks Range of Alaska. The design features of the tent are great. It is very spacious for its weight. My main recommendations for new owners are to 1. make sure to keep the main zipper clean; 2. carry a small roll of Tyvek tape for repair; 3. buy at least 5 alternative stakes for the four corners and the door. I like 7" titanium shepherd style stakes for gravel bars, which are our most common campsites. The reason for my three stars rating is the limited lifespan, which caught me by surprise given the excellent care and low UV environment that my tent experienced. The material became extremely fragile and was easily torn during set-up on its last trip. Good thing we had a lot of Tyvek tape! If you buy this tent for high UV springtime ski mountaineering (like many of the reviewers), then I think you should expect a much shorter lifespan than 40 days. Maybe just 1-2 trips, depending on conditions and duration. ?."

Fantastic for winter camping and ski traverses

"I purchased this to use for winter camping on ski traverses to replace an old black diamond megamid. Tested it out for a few nights this week camping up on a glacier. Lightweight, sturdy and easy to setup. It can also double up as a rescue tarp/shelter. It would be great if it came with a compression sack of some kind to help pack it down smaller."

Perfect Winter Expedition Cook Tent

"The MSR Front Range is a perfect winter expedition cook tent. I've put mine to use on two separate Alaska Range trips and it hasn't let me down. The reinforced top prevents the pole from spearing through, even when it's loaded with snow and soaking wet. The mid-point guy line attachments are a huge upgrade over some other brands for keeping it upright in the wind. Plenty big enough for 4 men to cook and relax inside while hiding from the elements."

Tarp & Insert

"Purchased the tarp and insert and experienced my first windstorm - it completely collapsed and stakes pulled from the ground (Winds were about 20 knots during a fall camping trip in Alaska). I used all the tie downs and stakes which came with the tarp & insert and they were woefully inadequate. After doing some research, I read that many people have had similar issues. The problem is that MSR did not provide adequate guy lines or stakes to properly secure the tarp - this results in a very weak structure. I've purchased many MSR products over the years but this one fell way short of my expectations of them as first-rate mountaineering-product company. Now, in addition to the $650 tarp/insert, I've had to invest in additional guy lines and stakes to make the tent usable."

Great ski-tour shelter for a small group

"Love this shelter! Replacing my Twin Sisters with something with a little more room and I'm very satisfied. Lightweight, easy setup, and functionally spacious. If needed, we could fit 4 people plus gear in here for the duration of our touring trip, but with only three, we are much more comfortable and have all the room we need."
