How do I clean my hydration reservoir?

Hand wash your hydration reservoir using warm or hot soapy water. Using our Cleaning Kit helps access tough-to-reach places.

For deeper cleaning:

  1. 1. Per liter (1 L) of your hydration reservoir’s volume, add ¼ cup (60 mL) of baking soda to ¾ cup (180 mL) of water and shake for 30 seconds (e.g., for a 2 L hydration reservoir, use ½ cup (120 mL) of baking soda with 1 ½ cups (360 mL) of water).
  2. 2. Add ¼ cup (60 mL) lemon juice per liter (1 L), close and shake for 10 seconds, then vent by opening the hydration reservoir away from your face.
  3. 3. Reseal the hydration reservoir and repeat shaking and venting three times. Expel as much air as possible, close the hydration reservoir, and soak for 20 minutes.
  4. 4. Dump the solution and rinse the hydration reservoir three times with hot water.

Caution: When adding lemon juice to baking soda, effervescence occurs and will cause pressure to build in a closed Platypus product.

How do I dry my hydration reservoir?

In general, it is optimal to prop or hang hydration reservoirs upright to dry. This allows moisture to evaporate and escape upward.

Drying Big Zip™ reservoirs is easy. First, wipe interior with a dry towel (made easy thanks to the large opening!). Then prop the reservoir open with the SlideLock™ slider and let it all air dry.

Another great way to dry a hydration reservoir is with a plastic bag dryer, widely available at kitchen supply stores and numerous online retailers.

Is it okay to freeze my hydration reservoir with water in it?

Yes. To do this, add water to your reservoir, being careful to not over-fill (fill no more than ¾ full—water expands as it freezes; it can burst your reservoir if you over-fill it). Purge all air and then lay your reservoir flat in the freezer overnight. Remove and enjoy a steady source of cold, refreshing hydration as the water melts!

Also, did you know that you can occasionally skip cleaning your reservoir by storing it in the freezer? It’s as simple as rinsing the whole system with fresh water, then placing it in the freezer until the next use.

How do I disinfect my hydration reservoir?

To disinfect your hydration reservoir, fill it with a solution of unscented household bleach and water, using a concentration of 2-5 drops per liter of water. Close and swirl for 10 seconds. Squeeze the bite valve to flush the hose and valve, being careful to keep the valve opening over the sink. Leave filled overnight. Dump solution and rinse hydration system (including hose and bite valve) three times with hot water, then air dry.

Note: for an eco-friendlier option, use a chlorine-free, hydrogen peroxide-based bleach alternative.

My new bite valve doesn’t seem to be working. How do I get the water to flow?

Does your hydration reservoir have a shutoff valve? If so, it may be closed. Open it by twisting the bite valve 90 degrees (clockwise closes it, counterclockwise opens it).

If that doesn’t work, you may be biting the valve too hard. Our HyFLO™ Bite Valve is designed so that you don’t need to bite very hard. If you bite too hard, the flow will be completely cut off. With your teeth, compress the valve lightly (only 30% to 50%), and water should flow.

My bite valve comes off easily. What should I do?

If your bite valve is coming off easily, we recommend refitting it by following these steps:

  1. 1. Remove the bite valve from the drink tube.
  2. 2. Cut a small section off the end of the drink tube.
  3. 3. Clean the bite valve and hose with rubbing alcohol.
  4. 4. Wet the end of the drink tube with water or saliva and slide the bite valve back onto the end of the drink tube.
  5. 5. Let it all dry (at least overnight).

This should result in an excellent connection between the bite valve and drink tube, and the bite valve should stay in place.

How do I prevent the water in my hydration reservoir from freezing in cold weather?

To help keep drink tubes and bite valves from freezing up, sip often to maintain flow, then blow any residual water back into the reservoir after you’ve finished drinking. It helps to squeeze the bite valve momentarily to remove any last drops.

Also, keep as much of the drink tube covered as possible by routing it inside a pack, strap, or jacket. You can start the day with warm or hot water in the reservoir and pack extra clothing layers around it to help retain heat.

Is there a way to filter water directly into my reservoir without removing it from my pack?

Yes. Simply remove the bite valve on your hydration reservoir and connect the end of the hose directly to your filtration system’s outflow port.

Our GravityWorks™ Water Filter System is available with direct-to-reservoir and direct-to-bottle adapters for optimum versatility. Connecting a GravityWorks filter to your reservoir creates what is arguably the lightest, most compact, and efficient way to get filtered water.

The zipper tracks on my Big Zip™ reservoir are hard to close. Can I make it easier?

Yes. Periodically adding a little Vaseline to the tracks will keep them supple and easy to close. Wipe away any excess Vaseline. In the field, a little lip balm or water can do the trick.

My water sloshes around in my reservoir. Can I make it stop?

Absolutely. After filling your reservoir, simply turn it upside down and simultaneously squeeze both the reservoir and the bite valve until all excess air is purged. You can also invert the reservoir and suck out the excess air, if you prefer. Either way—bye, bye sloshing!

"These 2 tubes will replace 2 other tubes that I had purchased 4 years ago. Which is good, considering that I have probably used at least 300 times during tgat time."

The 3 L is great for Backpacking

"I got one a couple summers ago, I really like my reservoir better than competitor brands. the clip with it is perfect for keeping my mouth piece out of the dirt or my sweat."

skyler l. (5/5)

love the very simple, clean

"love the very simple, clean and ultra light design; like the narrow style bladder as it fits cleanly into my backpacks. Bite valve worked very well, and flow was great! But definitely need an additional stopcock style valve on the drink tube, as you know it is only a matter of time before the bite valve starts dripping. . ."

This is replacing my old

"This is replacing my old Hoser that was over 10 years old. The new mouth piece is better than the old one and the new protector fits better than the old style. Awesome, lightweight, easy to use hydration system. I use it for hiking and back country skiing. Awesome product, thanks Platypus! It is a quality product, the only reason my old one wore out is because I have to remove the mouthpiece to move it from my hiking pack to my ski pack. The silicon on the mouth piece wore out. It lasted a lot longer than expected."

Wet = Not Fun

"My mom bought them for us back around 4 years ago or so, and we used them on 3 big trips. Some common issues I noticed (for mine) are that the bite valve leaks on me a TON as my backpack has no way to keep it up, and when I set the bag down, no matter where, even on clean surfaces, the bite valve gets dirty. The other issue we notice is that there's no way to close the bag without the tub. I saw the closer cap and the bite valve cover (not sure it works for this product), but I would love it if there was something similar to the Platypus Big Zip™ EVO Shutoff Valve for the Platypus Hoser™ Reservoir or some other accessory that can be added to a backpack to keep bite valve up so it does not leak on me after getting a drink."

Eric W. (3/5)

We took it with us

"We took it with us for 4 day trip to havasupai backpacking. Worked great better than any other filter I have used. No pump. Intuitive. Easy to backflow/maintain. Good quality. Non stinky, no smell/odor in the water."

Melissa C. (5/5)

Lasted 5 years

"Lasted 5 years before busting as the bottom seam and soaked my backpack. Used a a couple times a year and the occasionnal week of hiking. The pro: honestly it didn't have that much of a taste, great fit in my osprey talon 22. The con: The fact that you have to put the opening at the bottom is bad because sometimes it didn't close well and soaked the bag. Also no on/off switch for the straw so it leaks sometimes. Conclusion: I will not buy this one again and will try another one."

Julien (4/5)

These things have been bursting

"These things have been bursting at the seams in the last two years but I thought I’d try it once more because I had one that lasted 5 years"

Michael G. (2/5)

Leaking at the seam

"Worked for a while. Now leaks at the seam. The cap opening for the reservoir is too small. Makes it difficult to add any powders or tablets."

James B. (1/5)

Split seams

"Seems crack and split easily shortening the lifespan of this product"
