With which bottles and reservoirs is my QuickDraw compatible?

Dirty Side: The dirty side of the QuickDraw features inside/outside (I/O) threads. The outside set of threads is only compatible with QuickDraw reservoirs.™ The inside set of threads is compatible with all common 28mm-thread plastic water bottles (like smartwater®), and narrow-mouth Platy bottles including the SoftBottle™, the Platy® 2L, PlatyPreserve™ and the Platy® Water Tank.

Clean Side: The QuickDraw’s ConnectCap threads directly to all common 28mm-thread plastic water bottles (like smartwater®), and narrow-mouth Platy bottles including the SoftBottle™, the Platy® 2L, PlatyPreserve™, the Platy® Water Tank, and the Hoser™ Reservoir.

The QuickDraw 2L and 3L Gravity models have a hose with a quick connector fitted on the end that clicks into any hydration reservoir with a quick disconnect, like the Big Zip™ Evo. Hydration reservoirs without a quick disconnect pair with the ConnectCap by removing the reservoir’s bite valve and pushing its hose onto the ConnectCap’s hose attachment point.

The QuickDraw 3L Gravity’s Bottle Adapter threads directly to common wide-mouth bottles like Nalgene®, Hydro Flask® and Yeti®. It also press-fits to narrow-mouth bottles like all common 28mm-thread plastic water bottles (such as smartwater®), and narrow-mouth Platy bottles including the SoftBottle™, the Platy® 2L, PlatyPreserve™, the Platy® Water Tank, and the Hoser™ Reservoir.

What is the difference between the shake-to-clean and backflush cleaning methods?

While both cleaning methods clean your filter and can easily be performed in the field or at home, they are intended to complement each other and allow you to keep your QuickDraw free of debris and flowing fast.

Shake-to-Clean: Is the quicker cleaning method and can be easily done every time you filter. It works by agitating and dislodging particulates attached to the hollow fibers, particularly at the opening on the dirty side of the filter.

Backflush: Backflushing is more time consuming and the more thorough way to clean your QuickDraw. It works by passing clean water through the length of your QuickDraw—in the clean side and out the dirty side—thereby rinsing and removing particulates stuck to the hollow fibers along the length of the bundle.

How often should I shake-to-clean or backflush my QuickDraw?

That often depends on the clarity/quality of water being filtered. However proactive cleaning will keep your filter flowing faster for longer. Consider the following proactive cleaning routine:

  • Quickly perform a shake-to-clean before you filter each time you fill up.
  • Backflush the filter after every 10L of water you filter through it.

Use your best judgement and adjust the routine as needed depending on frequency of use and quality of water.

Do any of your products contain BPA, BPS, phthalates, or use polycarbonate?

No. All Platypus hydration products are 100% BPA-, BPS- and phthalate-free, and do not use polycarbonate.

Will the QuickDraw filter remove unpleasant tastes?

No. Hollow fiber filter media does not remove tastes from water.

Is it okay to filter tea-colored water?

Tea-colored water typically has a high concentration of decaying vegetation adjacent to, or in, a water source, resulting in a variety of organic acids. These acids, and the accompanying water conditions, are very hard on ALL types of water filters. Get your water elsewhere if you can.

However, if no alternatives exist, we recommend backflushing/cleaning your filter more frequently, even after each use. This will help minimize the clogging of the filter.

Why is my filter’s flow rate slow?

If your filter is new or has been sitting in storage for some time, you likely need to rewet the fibers. If you have been actively using your filter, then clogged particulates are the likely culprit. Click here for a troubleshooting FAQ.

How can I tell the difference between air purging out of my filter and a failed integrity test?

An air purge can appear as a large mass of smaller, foamy bubbles, similar to a jacuzzi or rapidly boiling water, versus a localized steady stream of distinct bubbles from one or several specific spots on the filter that indicates damage. 2 brand new bags came with holes

"Truly don't know what to think. I have bought and returned two now that came with a pinhole in the bag right out of the box. How is this possible? I see other reviews that these bags break easily, but a pinhole straight from the factory? I wish I could buy a 3rd and feel confident in bringing it to the backcountry but I just don't. Seems the quality has seriously plummeted since the days of my old 4L gravity filter, that bag was indestructible."

After using a variety of

"After using a variety of other hollow membrane filters, I've eventually settled on the Quickdraw for a few reasons. The flow rate is superior to the others, the Connectcap allows for a secure connection to a hose - thus turning this filter into a gravity filter if used with a larger reservoir. The backflush is useful and best of all, the integrity test is an absolute must if using this filter during the shoulder season when there's a risk of freezing temperatures."

Very good filter and reservoir

"Very satisfied with both the filter, and the reservoir. The former allows a good water flowing (although the "3 liter per minute" seems somewhat optimistic), and the latter is very sturdy and really plastic-taste-free even after a 24-hour water storage, unlike most other brands. Hence my suggestion: use this excellent reservoir material to upgrade the SoftBottle: this would correct its only flaw (i. e. leaks sooner or later)."

Not reliable during normal conditions

"I purchased the quick draw as an alternative to a water filter. I’ve been using for a few years. I am an avid backpacker, and was initially very excited when testing out the quick draw. Unfortunately, on the second trip I took it on, it did not function properly. I was unable to do an integrity test in the field, but when I got home, the filter failed the integrity test. Bear in mind that I have only owned this filter during the summer months, so freezing could not have been a factor. I tested beforehand, and I’m not sure what happened but I got quite an unfortunate stomach bug after the trip, which made sense considering that particulates came through the filter and my friend who was using another filter did not get sick using the same water source. considering that quality control must not have been up to par, I would not recommend this filter. Positives- the flow rate was great for the one trip it worked on. The bag is also nice and i enjoy the locking mechanism. I am really bummed!"

Works great, just need to

"Works great, just need to make sure you twist then push on the filter attachment, I find this mildly finicky."

Failed Integrity Test Right Out of the Box

"The system failed the Integrity Test right out of the box. It seems this is quite an issue with this filter - different offshore manufacturer now?"

Switched to this filter from

"Switched to this filter from an MSR gravity filter that I loved but needed something for solo backpacking. The QuickDraw is amazing! The caps that screw directly into your water bottle are so convenient and the squeeze bag seems durable. I especially love the little grab loop on the squeeze bag, it makes it so easy to fill up. The only thing I'd want different is a carry pouch to hold all the items in one place but I found a mesh bag that worked for that. 10/10 recommend"

Great filter, poor bladder

"The Quickdraw filter itself is the best in class, comparing to pump microfilters and clay-filter systems. I prefer it to the Sawyer in design, durability and ease of use. I also like the platypus bladders because they introduce no unpleasant plastic taste. However the "dirty water" squeeze bag in the Quickdraw suffers from manufacturing problems. Too often the seam is too narrow and close to the edge of the bag. I have had three of these bladders burst. If you are lucky it bursts on the end and can be rolled up for partial use. This weekend I had another burst on the filter end and it is useless. REI replaced one for free, the others are just over a year old. I see that Cascade is now selling replacement bags for $20. They should improve their manufacturing (just make the weld an 1/8 inch wider) and replace the old defective bags for free. (For example as Darn Tough does with socks. ) This would be great system if bladders held up for at least a few years."
