Carry On Snow Machine

"We groom ski trails where there is nothing to hook to if the snow machine overturns. As the snow has a 3-4 inch crust with 12" of sugar underneath, when a ski breaks thru on a sidehill, the machine flops on its side, even a very slow speeds. When you are by yourself, it is impossible to right the 700 lb machine without mechanical assistance. I have use the Snow Fluke 4 times since purchase in early April. With the Fluke pounded in and a rope-a-long attached, am able to exert sufficient pressure to right the snow machine. The anchor just keeps digging until it holds. Works so well takes less than 10 minutes from whoops to move on. I now carry two. Fairbanks, Alaska"

Light, packs well, an instant anchor in soft snow.

"I have modified my large MSR Snow Flute by removing the steel wire and replacing it with Marlows D12 Max 75 3mm Dyneema cord. I have suspended a 1200kg, (2600lb) weight from a single strand of this cord but it is not as durable so it will need replacing from time to time. The Large Snow now weighs 180g and packs much flatter. At the same time I lengthened the lead s to 1m, top lead, whilst maintain the same angle which may promote the flute to dive deeper. This is obviously not an MSR sanctioned modification but I have tested it, with a load cell, and am very happy with it's performance. I hope MSR will investigate this option for future models."
