How do I clean my Platypus bottle?

Platypus bottles are dishwasher safe. When placing Platypus bottles in a dishwasher, make sure they are fully expanded for optimal cleaning. Note: not all bottles may fit in a dishwasher, especially sizes 2 L and greater.

You can also hand wash your bottle using warm or hot soapy water. Using our Reservoir Cleaning Kit helps access tough-to-reach places.

For deeper cleaning:

  1. 1. Per liter (1 L) of your bottle’s volume, add ¼ cup (60 mL) of baking soda to ¾ cup (180 mL) of water and shake for 30 seconds (e.g., for a 2 L bottle, use ½ cup (120 mL) of baking soda with 1 ½ cups (360 mL) of water).
  2. 2. Add ¼ cup (60 mL) lemon juice per liter (1 L), close and shake for 10 seconds, then vent by loosening the cap away from your face.
  3. 3. Reseal the bottle and repeat shaking and venting three times. Expel as much air as possible, cap the bottle, and soak for 20 minutes.
  4. 4. Dump the solution and rinse the bottle three times with hot water.

Caution: When adding lemon juice to baking soda, effervescence occurs and will cause pressure to build in a capped Platypus product.

How do I dry my Platypus bottle?

Platypus bottles can be dried by blowing a little air into them to inflate, then letting them stand upright and uncapped until the water evaporates.

Can I put beverages other than water in my Platypus bottle, reservoir, or storage product?

You can put a variety of beverages in your Platypus bottle, reservoir, or storage product. Just make sure you clean it thoroughly after each use to prevent bacteria from growing in it (including any hydration tubes or bite valves). Carbonated beverages are not recommended.

How do I disinfect my Platypus bottle?

To disinfect your Platypus bottle, fill it with a solution of unscented household bleach and water, using a concentration of 2-5 drops per liter of water. Close and swirl for 10 seconds. Leave filled overnight. Dump solution and rinse bottle three times with hot water, then air dry.For a more planet-friendly alternative, use a chlorine-free, hydrogen peroxide-based bleach alternative like Free and Clear™ available from Seventh Generation®.

Can I freeze my Platypus bottle?

Yes. Lay it half-full on its side in freezer with all air purged. Do not over-fill. Water expands as it freezes and this can burst your bottle

"i love these things."

All good heading to Moab

"All good heading to Moab for further testing!"

Mark W. (5/5)

Love this softy, use it

"Love this softy, use it everyday at work. Much easier keeping this on me in the winter instead of a nalgene. Sadly it has already worn down on the center bottom crease and leaks to the point where i cant use it anymore. Still giving 5 stars but will be looking to have it replaced, and hopefully last more than a month."

Quinton W. (5/5)

Great bottle. Works just as

"Great bottle. Works just as expected. I had (and lost) a platypus that was softer (more flexible, it didn't crinkle), that also had a built in handle! I sure wish they still made that one! It's the preferred design!"

Ann D. (5/5)

Leaks, unlike the QuickDraw reservoir

"I've had several such bottles. Very satisfied with their compactness and lightweight, and no plastic taste even after a 24h storage. As reported in a former review of mine (and from other users), they are likely to leak, eiter at the bottom inner fold, or on the side of the upper part near the cap. Hence my suggestion: use the amazing and much more sturdy material of the QuickDraw Filter system for a future version of this bottle."

Hervé (3/5)

These are great. Use them

"These are great. Use them for hunting and backpacking. Super tough and reliable. Mega lightweight as well. Carry an extra one or two so when you need a heavier water load you can accommodate."

Jordan M. (5/5)

I love that this now

"I love that this now works with my Sawyer filters. You need to keep accessories, and here I'm speaking of the Closure Caps, better supplied. I loved my Quickdraw Filter but stopped using it and went back to my Sawyers simply because I couldn't find extra washers readily available for my longer trips. But yes, the Platy Bottle is great! Lightweight, packable and, above all, strong and dependable."

Great bottle to increase water storage on adventures

"I love these bottles. I got two for increasing water capacity while bikepacking. They are light weight, roll up nicely when not in use and have never leaked in a pannier."
