Don't waste your money

"I'm a huge MSR Fan. Been using their products since the late 80's and usually praise their designs, tents, stoves, trekking poles, shelters and filters. But this filter is worthless - seems like a gimmick. Bought it around 2018-2019 as an emergency backup water filter in the event my MSR waterworks was to ever fail on long trips (It never has) and to use for dayhikes. I have never been able to get a decent cupful of non-chemical tasting water from it. EVER!!! recently I pull it ou of my daypack to let me son take it on an AT Dayhike. It simply will not pump. It is clean but will not work and I have only tried it a few times. Please MSR, figure this out. I am apparently not the only one with issues."

Loved this filter until it failed on a trip

"I purchased this filter when it first came out circa 2018 and had used it for years. I recommended it for my brother-in-law and he bought one, too. I saw that some improvements were made with his model and the flow was significantly better, so I purchased a new filter cartridge. This improved things for my filter and I used it for a few more years. After getting my sister into backpacking and letting her borrow my first Trail Shot, I decided to pick up another in 2024 for myself. This one has given me trouble after just a few trips, and on the last trip it was not usable. The flow was so restricted that all I could get through the filter after applying much force was a slight trickle—not enough to make it usable. Thankfully my buddy had his Sawyer along and we got by with that filter the remainder of the hike. I don’t know what went wrong with the Trail Shot. I’m meticulous about maintaining and storing my gear. After every use I followed the cleaning and storing instructions. I would love to be able to recommend this filter because it is great where there is limited water along the trail and in situations where it is impossible to scoop water or place a bottle under a trickling water source."

Outstanding Performance

"Exceptional water filter! Just completed a one day Teton Crest Trail run and used this filter along the way. Easy to use. Lightweight. Accessible. If you know how to milk a cow you know the rhythm to use! This was a confidence booster too knowing how easy it was to use. This really helped with frequent hydration along the trail as we ran. Looking forward to using this filter again. A must for any future back country adventure run or hike! Coach Kirk"

The best, most compact water

"The best, most compact water filter I've ever used. So great for spring mountaineering missions with lots of snowmelt!"

James D. (5/5)

Small and convenient . . . but

"I have used this product for three years. I rotate between two of them during the year. Primarily used during backcountry hiking / fishing trips. Pros: -Size and packability - Very easy to use Cons: - Mouthpiece cap pops off when pumping - replacement cartridge is expensive -"

Too good to be true

"I really wanted to like to like this filter given that it's very light and relatively inexpensive. Unfortunately it was too good to be true. After three seasons of limited use the filter no longer works. I've only used it 3-5 times per season (nowhere near the 2,000L filter rating) with clear lake water and I've always followed the instructions. On a recent trip I was stuck with a useless filter. Luckily there was another filter in our group that we could use. I wouldn't recommend this water purifier."

Super light weight and fast

"Super light weight and fast to filter water. Used it on a 5 day backpacking trip and had no issues"

Elly C. (5/5)

Works okay, expensive replacement parts.

"I only really got one a couple uses out of this. After my first summer with the Trail Shot, I had rinsed it, left it out to dry and packed it away for the season. The following season when I pulled it out to use the filter appeared to be filled with black mold. Unfortunately a replacement filter costs more than what I had paid at the time for the entire Trail Shot."

Justin (2/5)

Worthless junk

"Trail shot water filter is absolute garbage. Makes a mess, the lines to short only partially works. I was very deliberate with operation per instructions. This thing is awful. Id like my money back."

Paul K. (1/5)

Stopped working after storage

"Exact same problem as JD posted on 7/8/2024 (and others). It worked great for three trips. After storage over the winter, now it does not work."
