The Instant Field Repair Kit makes fast, easy and lasting sleeping pad repairs in the field. It includes all the same great self-adhesive patches that now come included with most Therm-a-Rest sleeping pads, and is just the insurance you need to prevent an unexpected puncture from ruining your trip. Works on all current Therm-a-Rest sleeping pads, except pads with knit fabric: MondoKing, LuxuryMap, Trail Pro.

Challenge

"I found it pretty challenging to use this repair system during a spring snow storm in the Rocky Mountains. The pad gets wet trying to find the leak. Then you have to dry that part of the pad to apply the patch material. Meanwhile if you didn’t bring a marking device like a magic marker you’re going to have hold the pad in a way that the invisible hole is at the tip of your finger. Now that the pad is kind of dry, applying that gum drop when it’s freezing means it sticks to everything warmer than the frozen pad. The next challenge is separating the overpatch from the paper backing. You better have some fingernails and manual dexterity because there isn’t an easy way to separate the two. Totally amazing that they haven’t incorporated easier methods and materials for patching in the field under adverse environmental conditions. Maybe incorporate a less temperature solvent in the glue dot? Maybe put a split in the backer paper on the over patch? Now don’t get me wrong, I love my xtherm but 3 holes in blizzard like conditions was just a notch above devastating."

Glue spots unable to "smear" out

"I had 3 small punctures from something very sharp. The punctures are 3-6mm long. Bought the "Instant field repair kit" and applied as instructed but it didn't feel right with the glue spots, they were quite hard and I wasn't able to "smear" them out, needed to use 5 glue spots and 3 patches for the holes. seems airtight but didn't had the time to test before going out again for 8 nights. Bought another Thermarest Neoiar Topo Luxe just to be sure to get the sleep during our exercise. I might have done something wrong with the repair kit but read it again after coming home."

"I very carefully applied these patches, three times, and each failed. I have a long history of successfully patching thermarest air mattresses, and these patches are dismal. I switched to another system, and the patch worked the first time, and has held fine."
