Description

It may not look like it, but make no mistake, the NeoLoft is a true backpacking sleeping pad. From the inside out, every element of the NeoLoft comes together to deliver sublime comfort while remaining incredibly light and packable. 3D construction elevates the pad to 4.6 inches (11.7 cm) thick, making the NeoLoft a side sleeper’s dream. Vertical sidewalls attach the top and bottom fabric and eliminate the tapering edges of non-3D pads. This increases the sleep surface by 20% and delivers excellent stability—you’ll never feel like you’re falling off while you adjust to get comfortable.

On the outside, the NeoLoft’s surface is made of a plush stretch knit fabric (the NeoLoft is the first ever air pad to be made with stretch knit). Stretch knit is a base layer-like fabric with multi-directional elasticity and is FAR softer to the touch than the nylons typically used to make backpacking pads. Its stretch properties improve the NeoLoft’s contouring support and help to minimize pressure points by locally conforming to the shape of your body. On the inside is the ContourCore Matrix™—the epicenter of the NeoLoft’s backcountry-ready specs. It efficiently insulates by minimizing convective heat loss with two stacked rows of triangular chambers, while ThermaCapture™ reflects body heat back at you, delivering a year-round R-value rating of 4.7. Along the sides we built in large chambers that rise to form side rails when the pad is inflated. These give your body a tactile sense of the pad’s edge and cradle you towards its center to prevent roll-offs.

We fitted the NeoLoft with our high-volume-pad TwinLock™ Valve System. The two-valve system rapidly inflates the NeoLoft with a dedicated ‘In’ valve featuring one-way air flow, and quickly dumps air with a dedicated ‘Out’ valve. Paired with a high-volume, seam-sealed pump sack, the NeoLoft blows up and packs out quickly and efficiently.

What is solution-dyed fabric?

Solution-dyed fabric uses pre-dyed fibers to minimize the water and energy required to color the fabric. This means that color, or pigment, is added to the material producing the completed fabric. Compared to conventional batch-dyeing—the process of dyeing already produced fabric— solution dyeing requires significantly less water and energy, reducing waste and carbon emissions.

Will the NeoLoft fit in my tent?

Check the floor dimensions of your tent to see if they will accommodate the extra width of a NeoLoft pad. Lengthwise, every NeoLoft size will fit in the typical backpacking tent.

The floor dimensions of most 2-person backpacking tents are typically 50-52 in (127-132 cm) wide by 88-90 in (223-229 cm) long. If your 2-person backpacking tent is 52 in (132 cm) wide, then it will fit two Regular Wides or two Longs, or one of each. If your 2-person backpacking tent is 50 in (127 cm) wide, two of the wider NeoLofts will bulge slightly against the sides, but it will easily fit one Regular Wide or Long and one Regular.

Why is the NeoLoft wider and longer than other pads even though they are the same size (Regular, Regular Wide, Large)?

A Regular Wide NeoLoft measures 26 in x 73 in (66 cm x 185 cm), whereas a Regular XLite™ NXT measures 25 in x 72 in (64 cm x 183 cm). The NeoLoft’s 3D construction utilizes a sidewall band that attaches the top and bottom fabric. The sidewalls bulge out a bit when inflated, adding a touch of extra length and width.

Is the NeoLoft™ a NeoAir® sleeping pad?

No it’s not; we borrowed the ‘Neo’ moniker due to similarities in the internal constructions of the NeoLoft and the NeoAir pads. The NeoAir uses Triangular Core Matrix construction and the NeoLoft has ContourCore Matrix construction.

What’s the difference between Triangular Core Matrix™ construction and ContourCore Matrix™ construction?

Optimized for industry-leading warmth-to-weight ratios, Triangular Core Matrix is used inside our lightest, most compact sleeping pads. ContourCore Matrix uses the same thermally efficient design (two stacked layers of triangular chambers that disrupt convective heat loss) but incorporates a more flexible urethane material that allows for a thicker pad and superior contouring support. It’s heavier and less compact but maximizes comfort.

How should I inflate my self-inflating pad the first time?

For best performance, inflate your self-inflating pad with air by breath or pump and sack and leave the mattress fully inflated for 2-4 hours before your first use.

How do I inflate my self-inflating pad during winter?

In freezing conditions, avoid breath inflating your self-inflating pad. The moisture from your breath can freeze inside the mattress. The mattress may self-inflate slower in cold weather. Use a pump sack or electric pump if the pad needs additional air.

How Does a Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad Work?

Self-inflating sleeping pads rely on the compressible and rebound-able open cell foam cores to self-inflate. The atmospheric pressure around the pad pushes air into the rebounding open cells when the valve is opened. Check out our blog post for more information.

How Long Should it Take for My Pad to Self-Inflate?

Generally, it takes 5-15 minutes for any of our self-inflating pads to inflate on their own. That 10-minute variance range is probably due to one of the following factors: core construction, trained compression, elevation and temperature. We find the most significant factor is trained compression (i.e. if your pad is new and has been factory rolled on the shelf for some time or stored rolled up for a few months). Why Doesn’t My Self-Inflating Pad Inflate All the Way?

Self-inflation begins when the valve is opened and ends when equilibrium is reached between the atmospheric pressure outside the cells and the air pressure within the cells pushing the other way. In our experience, most users’ comfort level requires more air than the equilibrium level, which is why self-inflating pads don’t inflate “all the way.” Check out our blog post for more information.

How should I store my sleeping pad?

  • Self-Inflating: We recommend storing the mattress unrolled and fully inflated in a dry place with the valve open. This will ensure the foam self-inflates faster when camping. Storage for a prolonged time in a damp space may cause mildew damage which is not covered by our Limited Lifetime Warranty.
  • NeoAir: We recommend leaving the valve open and storing your mattress rolled tight in a stuff sack to protect it from dirt and sharp objects.

What is the best way to clean my sleeping pad?

Regular cleaning will extend the life of your mattress, especially if you sleep in direct contact with its surface.

Do not put your mattress in the washing machine. Cleaning with a hose or in a bathtub is best. Do not forget to close the valve while washing. For general cleaning, a quick scrubbing with Formula 409®, BioClean™ All-Purpose Cleaner, or other general household cleaner is best.

For tree sap, spot clean with a cotton rag soaked in rubbing alcohol. This will take some work and sap will likely leave a stain. However, a dusting with talc or baby powder when you are done should eliminate any residual stickiness.

What should I do if I think my sleeping pad is losing air?

If you think that your NeoAir or self-inflating sleeping pad are losing air, it’s possible that you have a puncture in your pad. If you want to repair your pad at home, check out this blog post. If you’d like to send your pad to our Seattle repair shop, head over to our warranty page.

How warm is my sleeping pad and what is the ASTM testing standard?

ASTM F3340-18 is a new testing standard that provides R-value ratings for sleeping pads. While Therm-a-Rest has always used R-value to rate our sleeping pads, this new standardization will allow campers to make “like-for-like” comparisons with our competitors pad.     • Unroll your sleeping pad and open the valve cap by twisting it counter-clockwise.
    • Use a pump sack or breath to inflate your pad. The one-way valve will prevent air from escaping.

  • To Deflate WingLock™ Valve:
    • Open the wings to open the one-way valve.

Can I replace my old Therm-a-Rest valve with a new WingLock™ Valve or TwinLock™ Valve?

Worth Every Penny

"I’ve used this mat for 3 trips now, spanning from early May in northern Quebec to south algonquin in August heat. Thermal rating is amazing. Very comfort, for someone who flips all over the place it covers all sleeping positions. The inlet valve is engineered great to connect the inflation bag and deflates so easily for packup. Best backcountry sleep ever

"I have never slept well in the backcountry, and that is mostly due to less than ideal pads. As a side sleeper, a fully inflated pad was never comfortable, so my shoulders and hips were always in contact with the ground on a less inflated pad. Then there was the constant issue of sliding off the sides in the middle of the night. Enter the neo loft…the solution to my woes. And what a solution it is. Not the lightest, nor the smallest pad, but it more than makes up for its weight in comfort. I’d rather shave weight elsewhere in my kit and sleep better. When compared to what I carried 20-30years ago, this thing is still tiny, and relatively lightweight. It’s also quiet and flexes well whilst moving about - which I do A LOT. As others have mentioned, it is not as warm as the rating suggests, and I suspect it is the vertical sidewalls. A closed cell pad underneath would be a good plan if the temps dip below freezing. Even with my Xtherm, I bring a Z lite pad if I’ll be camping on snow, so that could be a good plan in the high alpine or during shoulder seasons with this pad. All in all, this pad is a massive win, and I couldn’t be happier. Easy 5 stars."

As a 46-year-old woman who

"As a 46-year-old woman who has had multiple back surgeries, I am very particular about what I sleep on. My most recent surgery was an emergency procedure for cauda equina syndrome on April 2, 2026. It was an extremely serious situation that left me partially paralyzed for several months. Because of that history, getting a good night's sleep with proper support isn't just a matter of comfort for me—it is essential. I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews before deciding to purchase the Neoloft sleeping pad. After using it on a two-week trip, I can honestly say I was not disappointed with my decision. The first night, I used the Neoloft in my Chevy Traverse, and I slept like a baby. The following week, I was a coach at a kayak symposium, where I was physically active and pushing my body every day. Despite that, I woke up each morning feeling refreshed—just as I would have after sleeping in my own bed at home. The second week of the trip was spent driving home through Michigan's Upper Peninsula, with each night spent in a different location. So I had the opportunity to use the Neoloft repeatedly rather than simply trying it for one or two nights. It continued to provide the comfort and support I was looking for throughout the trip. For me, the comfort and support were excellent. I experienced no pressure points, and my hips and shoulders sank comfortably into the pad. I'm primarily a side and stomach sleeper, and I felt well supported in both positions. I was also able to toss and turn comfortably, just like I do in my own bed, without feeling like I was going to roll off the pad. The size is definitely something to consider. The Neoloft is a larger sleeping pad, so it probably isn't the best choice for someone whose primary goal is minimizing weight and packed size. However, for car camping or kayak camping, I think the extra room is absolutely worth the tradeoff. The larger size made a huge difference for me. It fit great in my Chevy Traverse, although I don't think it would have worked in a significantly smaller SUV. Because of my back, I don't think I could comfortably sleep on a thinner sleeping pad. For me, the additional size and cushioning aren't unnecessary extras—they are what make the pad usable and comfortable. Setup was also easy. I used a separate pump, and inflation took approximately one to two minutes. Getting the firmness I wanted was very easy, and deflating and packing the pad away was equally simple. I found the packed size and weight reasonable for the type of camping I do. After two weeks and multiple locations, my overall impression is extremely positive. It may not be the pad for someone counting every ounce or looking for the smallest possible packed size. But if comfort, space, and a good night's sleep are your priorities, especially for car camping or kayak camping, I highly recommend giving the Neoloft a serious look. For me, the ultimate test was simple: after spending long days on the water and pushing my body hard, I could crawl into my sleeping setup at night and wake up feeling like I'd slept in my own bed. That's exactly what I was hoping for when I bought it, and the Neoloft delivered."
